Australian Business Excellence Award 2007

Catholic Schools Office Broken Bay takes out Top Honour
in OHS Management Systems

Last night the Catholic Schools Office of the Diocese of Broken Bay was named winner of the 19th Annual SAI Global Systems Excellence Award for Occupational Health and Safety.

Before a filled Grand Ballroom at the Westin Hotel, Sydney, representatives from CSO Broken Bay, including Director of Schools Br Tony Whelan cfc and OHS Consultant CSO, Mrs Mary Gow, accepted the honour in recognition for the organization that demonstrated continuous improvement of workplace health and safety through implementation of a systemic approach.

“We are exceptionally proud to have received such a prestigious award,” commented Br Tony Whelan.

“Excellence and best practice has characterised this management system from its launch to the present. We are honoured to be known as a community that is committed to the health, safety and welfare of all staff, students and parents.”

CSO Broken Bay’s OHS management system (OHSMS) has been in place in CSO Broken Bay’s 43 primary and secondary schools for four years.

The underlying principle driving the implementation of the OHSMS has been the deliberate and steady development of a culture of safety in each of the schools.

“Broken Bay School staff are now very conscious of how health and safety permeates every aspect of school life,” said Mary Gow, OHS Consultant CSO Broken Bay.

“Staff can confidently talk about OHS issues, they know how to identify, assess and control hazards. The system has formed a strong basis for good risk management,”

External interest has also grown. Together with CSO Broken Bay, 17 additional organizations are now using a generic version of CSO OHSMS. The outreach has spread to the well-being of more than 780 school communities, comprising hundreds of thousands of students, workers, families and visitors in three States of Australia.

SAI Global Systems Excellence Awards have been designed to recognize and reward excellence and best practice in business improvement in all entities, from local councils, not for profit groups, small businesses to large listed companies. The 2007 Awards held representation from twenty-eight Australian businesses including Freemantle Ports, Bridgeclimb and Main Roads WA.
