Australian Government Innovation Grant

A cluster of Broken Bay schools successfully applied for an Australian Schools Innovation in Science, Technology and Mathematics (ASISTM) grant for 2005-06. The project - “ Improving achievement in Mathematics through pedagogical innovation ” - focused on action research in Mathematics pedagogy and involved a cluster of primary and secondary schools on the Central Coast . The schools involved were:

  • St. Joseph 's Catholic College East Gosford
  • MacKillop Catholic College Warnervale
  • Holy Cross Catholic Primary School Kincumber
  • Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School Terrigal
  • St. John the Baptist Catholic Primary School Woy Woy
  • St. Mary's Catholic Primary School Toukley
  • St. Brendan's Catholic Primary School Lake Munmorah

There were several key features of the project:

  • Regular cluster meetings enabling school teams to share progress
  • Access to highly regarded Mathematics expertise (Dr. Judy Anderson , Associate-Professor Joanne Mulligan, Brian Tickle)
  • Collaboration between primary and secondary schools
  • Strategic links with a system-wide focus on excellent pedagogy

At its conclusion, the project was judged to be very successful. A CD-Rom containing detail of each school's project, the outcomes and support materials is under production and will be launched in March 2007. While the focus in each school varied, the emphasis on improved student learning was central to the overall project and was evidenced at each school.
