Award Winning Production for St Peter’s Catholic College, Tuggerah
Students from St Peter’s Catholic College, Tuggerah achieved first place out of eleven schools at the recent OxyGen Rock Eisteddfod Challenge® Newcastle Final. The production involved 130 students from St Peter’s. They now enter the Sydney competition on August 1st. The event was part of a National Tour which involved more than 30,000 students, aiming to motivate young people to engage in positive and healthy lifestyles. Teams as small as 10 or as large as 140 students, plan an eight-minute performance based on a theme of their choice and set it to contemporary commercially available music. Students, teachers and entire communities work together over a period of months planning and rehearsing, before competing against other schools. It is an opportunity to develop dedication and resilience in the students as well as a real commitment to their school. St Peter’s had success in 2005 by winning the Open Division of the competition with ‘Guilty ‘Til Proven Innocent’, the hard hitting story of Lindy Chamberlain and her trial by media. As the staff and students started discussing possibilities for the 2007 theme, they wanted to examine an issue of importance that had an impact on the Australian community and was of historic significance while promoting intense debate. Using Gough Whitlam’s election and dismissal as the theme of their performance, the students learned about a pivotal time in Australia’s history, translating it into the award winning production entitled ‘It’s Time’. The school won a total of eleven awards of excellence on the evening for all different aspects of their performance. These awards were: Excellence in Choreography, School Initiative, Drama, Performance Skill, Costuming Character, Visual Enhancement, Stage Use, Concept, Sound Track and the Gemma Dale Award for Excellence as well as the award for Friendliest School which was voted on by all participating schools. On winning the Newcastle Final, the Principal Mrs Comerford was telephoned by Gough Whitlam, himself, who congratulated the College on their success and wished them well for the Sydney competition. The College has a reputation for success in the Creative and Performing Arts with excellent Higher School Certificate results in these subjects, and a recent first place of the school choir at the Hunter Valley Eisteddfod.
