Bishop and MP open new school buildings at St Mary’s, Toukley
The Bishop of Broken Bay, Bishop David Walker, with the Federal Member for Dobell, Craig Thomsen officially opened the new classrooms at St Mary’s Catholic School, Toukley last Thursday 20 May. The new classrooms were built with funding from the Federal Government’s Building the Education Revolution (BER) program.
A special Recognition Ceremony was held outside the new buildings with the whole school in attendance, as well as special guests including Br Tony Whelan, Director of Schools in the Diocese of Broken Bay.
Bishop David thanked the Federal Government for the funding provided with the BER program. “Please pass on our gratitude to Mr Rudd for the money provided to build these new classrooms,” said Bishop David to Mr Thomsen. “The school community appreciates not only the BER grant, but the constant year-round funding provided by the Federal Government to help run our Catholic schools.”
Mr Thomsen responded by thanking the St Mary’s community for welcoming him. “These new buildings will provide great teaching and learning for this generation, and future generations to come,” said Mr Thomsen. “The Federal Government is very pleased to see the outcome of this project in particular, and the wonderful buildings the students and staff at St Mary’s now have.”
As part of the ceremony, Bishop David blessed the new buildings, and the St Mary’s school choir performed.
Principal Kevin Williams also thanked the Government for the financial support with the BER program. “It has given the school 21st century classrooms and refurbished facilities supporting quality learning in our Catholic school,” said Mr Williams. “We are extremely grateful to the Federal Government for supporting this project and will reap the benefits for many years to come.”
The St Mary’s building project provided Year 3, 4 and 5 classes with brand new classrooms, all with the latest technology including interactive whiteboards. Year 6 classes have also been refurbished. A new undercroft has been established for the students for play at lunchtimes, as well as refurbished student amenities.
The Year 5 students enjoyed giving Bishop David and Br Tony a lesson on how to use the new interactive whiteboards after the ceremony.
