Central Coast choirs seize the day

 

Students from nine Central Coast Catholic Schools came together to “Seize the Day!” on 29 July 2010, for the inaugural Central Coast Catholic Primary Schools Choral Day.

More than 360 Students from Years 2-6 representing St Brendan’s, Lake Munmorah, Our Lady of the Rosary, Wyoming; St John the Baptist, Woy Woy; Our Lady Star of the Sea, Terrigal; Our Lady of the Rosary, The Entrance; St Cecilia’s, Wyong; St John Fisher, Tumbi Umbi and MacKillop, Warnervale joined together with their choir teachers to celebrate and share their vocal gifts. It is the first time a choral event of this kind has been held on the Central Coast.

The day commenced with students gathering to put together the opening song, “Seize the Day” by A. Menken and Jack Feldman. Led by St Cecilia’s music teacher, Mrs Chris Boler, all 369 voices combined beautifully on stage.  Movements were added which proved to be a fun and exciting challenge. The rest of the day was spent rehearsing each choir’s individual items, practising entering and leaving the stage area and generally enjoying each choir’s performance. The combined choirs concluded the performance with the finale - a stirring piece titled “Why We Sing” by Gerard Gilpin.

Entertainment students from St Peter’s Catholic College demonstrated their developing expertise on the day as they assisted with organising the technical side of the event, including lighting and sound, projections and video recording as well as the logistics of moving students on and off the stage.

The event culminated in an outstanding performance for parents and friends in a packed St Peter’s school hall.  The day was an overwhelming success with students commenting that they learnt so much and really valued the opportunity to get together with so many other students who love singing.

Both parents and teachers involved have expressed widespread enthusiasm for this to be a regular event on the arts calendar of Central Coast Catholic primary schools.
