Excellent HSC results for Broken Bay schools.
Again this year, Broken Bay diocesan schools are celebrating outstanding HSC results. Across the seven schools, 279 Band 6 (or equivalent) results were achieved by students. In the Broken Bay school system, 57% of all courses were above the state average. Principals are also reporting very strong ATAR (Australian Tertiary Entrance Rank) scores. A particularly pleasing feature of this year’s results is the number of excellent individual performances. Schools are celebrating the “All Rounder” performances of their students who have achieved Band 6 in 10 or more units. These students have been excellent role models for their peers, and, importantly, for the students coming after them. St Leo’s Catholic College are also delighted to report that one of their students was top in the state for Design and Technology, and another was second top student in the state for Modern History. Another significant aspect of the performance of diocesan students in this year’s HSC is the participation of students with special needs. Graduating from Year 12 and being awarded a Higher School Certificate requires application and dedication, for students who have additional learning needs this pathway can be more challenging. Twenty two students across the diocese with diagnosed disabilities graduated with a Higher School Certificate in 2010. These students completed their HSC with a combination of Board Developed courses, Vocational Education subjects and for some, Life Skills courses. Two students with a hearing impairment successfully completed their HSC by studying all Board Developed courses. Of particular note is their achievement in 2 Unit English, a subject of particular challenge for students whose vocabulary development is severely impacted by their disability. These two students (from Mercy and St Paul’s Catholic Colleges) have been supported by the visiting teacher program and the Learning Support teams at their school. Another student achieved a number of prestigious awards in Vocational Education, studying Hospitality, Entertainment, IT, Business Services and Retail. These HSC results reflect the students’ commitment to their studies, the broad range of subjects offered at our schools and quality teaching. These strong results, in a system of comprehensive, non-selective schools, reflect the efforts of outstanding professional teachers, working with committed students, supported by their families.
