MacKillop student reaching for the stars
MacKillop Catholic College student Jack Geoghegan will travel to Russia in July and study at Star City, the headquarters of the Russian cosmonaut training program. The Year 12 student is part of an elite group of six students from Australia chosen to participate in the experience as part of the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). Over 4000 students applied to be a part of the 2010 NYSF and of that 450 were chosen to participate in the program. From there, only six students were chosen to represent Australia and the NYSF on a two-week study tour of Russia. "I have always been interested in science and space, it's my passion and I have always wanted to visit Russia, both for the space program and for the culture," said Jack. "It's just going to be such a rich experience, because we are going to have access to a lot of restricted facilities that the public wouldn't normally see and the contacts that we will make and the whole experience will expose us to so many different opportunities.” MacKillop Catholic College Principal Stephen Aitken was full of praise for Jack. “Jack is an outstanding student in Year 12 with a great love of Science and Maths, studying Physics and Chemistry, Advanced English and Extension 2 Maths, as well as Studies of Religion,” said Mr Aitken. “He has thought about being a pilot, but is now leaning towards Engineering, probably Aeronautical Engineering. “Jack has a wonderful attitude to his studies and notwithstanding his academic excellence, remains very grounded as a young man,” added Mr Aitken. “He deserves every success he has achieved.” |
