More cheers than tears as Kindy kids start school

It was a momentous day for over 1700 of our Kindergarten children in the Diocese of Broken Bay when they started big school at the start of Term 1.

Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic School at Epping welcomed 19 Kindergarten students on Friday 29 January. First time parents and kids were a little nervous but mostly excited about the experience.

First time Kindy mum Janelle said her daughter was so excited and couldn’t wait for the big day. “I think she’s practically worn her school shoes out already, she’s been wearing them every day!”

Another first time Kindy mum Desiree agreed, and said her son was well-prepared to start school. “He learned to tie his shoe laces before he came to school, he was very eager to start.”

Desiree said Our Lady Help of Christians was a great school and has made the family feel very comfortable about starting school. “We are from a long line of Catholic school students in our family, and as the time got closer to choose a school, the local Catholic school was the best option for us.”

The Kindergarten class eased into school with a half day, which included some time playing on the equipment outside.

At St Gerard’s Catholic School in Carlingford, the Kindergarten kids got off to a flying start on Monday 1 February. Parents and children alike avoided tears and were all very excited about the new stage of their lives. As the Kindy parents waved goodbye to their children they received a rose from the Year 6 students. Afterwards they attended a ‘tears and cheers” morning tea in the school hall, but there seemed to be a lot more cheers than tears.

Joseph and Jennifer chose St Gerard’s for their first son, who started Kindy this week. The family are part of the St Gerard’s parish community and Jennifer herself attended the school. “There was no question really where he would go to school,” said Jennifer. “We didn’t even look at any other schools.”

Jennifer said that their son had enjoyed the orientation program late last year and felt very comfortable starting Kindergarten. Jennifer added that the school had made the family feel very welcome right from the start. “The school has a great vibe. I felt like I was coming home.”

Carmen and Frank’s daughter is their second child to attend St Gerard’s, with their older son in Year 5. They chose St Gerard’s based on good feedback from other parents in the community.

“The school was very welcoming and all the staff were very caring,” said Carmen. “The other parents were also very supportive, and there is a great social network for parents in the school.”

Carmen and Frank said they were always going to choose a Catholic education for their children, and felt St Gerard’s was a wonderful Catholic school with a great community.
