National Literacy and Numeracy Week Awards

 

The winners of the National Literacy and Numeracy Week 2007 Excellence Awards for Schools were recently announced by the Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP. Out of the fifty six schools across Australia who received these prestigious awards, two Catholic primary schools from the Broken Bay Diocese were successful in receiving a Highly Commended Award for numeracy.

Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic School, Terrigal and St Agatha’s Catholic School, Pennant Hills were presented with their awards by The Hon. John Della Bosca MLC, NSW Minister for Education and Training at a ceremony held for NSW school recipients at Taronga Zoo.


The award also provided each school with $5000 to assist with continued learning and resource purchases for mathematics.


Our Lady Star of the Sea, Terrigal was presented with their cheque by the Federal Member for Robertson, the Hon. Jim Lloyd MP, at a special school assembly to launch National Literacy and Numeracy Week.  The school received their award for developing consistent practice in teaching and learning and for improving the standards of children’s maths learning.


The Federal Member for Berowra, the Hon. Philip Ruddock MP, presented St Agatha’s, Pennant Hills with their cheque at a school function with parents in attendance.  The award recognised the school’s successful numeracy program with improved student outcomes achieved over a three year period. 
Both school communities were delighted to receive the recognition for the excellent teaching and learning provided by their staff.


The awards marked a successful beginning to National Literacy and Numeracy Week with many Broken Bay schools holding special activities to showcase excellence in literacy and numeracy.
