National School Pride program approvals for 38 Catholic systemic schools in Diocese of Broken Bay

The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, recently announced that 5,965 Australian schools will receive $828.16 million in funding for minor infrastructure and refurbishment projects under round one of the National School Pride program; a component of the Australian Government’s $14.7 billion Building the Education Revolution.

Catholic systemic schools in the Diocese of Broken Bay have received approval for the 38 applications totalling $5.75 million that were submitted in round one. Under this program Australian schools will receive up to $200,000, based on the size of the school, for maintenance and minor building works.

‘At the local level, in a short period of time, our schools have undertaken consultation to prioritise the major needs of their school communities,’ said Br Tony Whelan cfc, Director of Schools, Diocese of Broken Bay.

‘This process has been made far easier, as each school in the Diocese of Broken Bay has had a ten year maintenance plan in place for some time.’

Examples of the many projects in Broken Bay schools include: St Bernard’s Catholic School, Berowra Heights will be able to refurbish their classrooms and student amenities; Our Lady Help of Christian’s Catholic School, Epping can refurbish their hall; St John the Baptist Catholic School, Woy Woy will refurbish external and internal school facilities and procure new classroom furniture; St Kieran’s Catholic School, Manly Vale will refurbish their school grounds and classrooms; and St Paul’s Catholic College, Manly will be refurbishing their classrooms.

These projects will create demand for tradespeople in local communities, of which Diocese of Broken Bay Catholic schools and parishes are an integral part.

Building work will commence from May onwards with all round one projects required to be completed by December 2009.

Applications for round two close in early May 2009 with remaining eligible schools applying for funding.
