Peninsula students action for Social Justice

On Thursday 5 August, Year 6 students from across the Peninsula Learning Community of Catholic Schools gathered together for a Social Justice Workshop at St Kevin’s Catholic School, Dee Why. Students from St Paul’s Catholic College and Mater Maria Catholic College were on hand as mentors to help the Year 6 students work on their social justice plans for 2010.

The theme for this year was ‘Education – A right for all children.’ Students listened to a number of guest speakers, including Sister Meg Tallafer who spoke about her order in the Philippines and the work they do with orphans. Phil Jones who spoke about using Fair Trade products, Michelle O’Sullivan talked about a non-profit organisation called Barefeet that assists children in an orphanage in Tanzania, and David Ella, Aboriginal Education Officer at the Catholic Schools Office, spoke very passionately about his pride in being an indigenous Australian but also of his experiences of racism and discrimination.

Students then worked in their own school groups to develop a plan to fundraise and raise awareness in their school and parish communities about helping children in the developing world receive an education.

Each group presented their action plan and talked about ways they would implement them.

“The Social Justice Workshop is another great example of how the Peninsula Learning Community of Catholic Schools can work together not only to help student’s learning but help others in the wider community,” said Anne Duncan, Principal of St John’s Catholic School, Narraweena. “The Year 6 students are leaders in their schools and are all enthusiastic to share their knowledge with their fellow students.”
