National Rock Eisteddfod Champions (School Bullies)

St Peter’s named National Rock Eisteddfod Champions

St Peter’s Catholic College, Tuggerah were declared the National RAW Division Champions of the 2009 Rock Eisteddfod Challenge through the television special, which aired on 7 November. They were previously named NSW Champions at the State final in September at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

St Peter’s won with a powerful performance “One in Five”, exploring depression in its many forms. Dance teacher Larissa Caruana with the St Peter’s students, came up with the concept for the performance.

“Some of our students at St Peter’s have suffered depression, and nearly everyone knows someone who has,” said Ms Caruana. “We thought it was a subject that needed exploring, and after consulting the school counsellor, we were able to address the subject with sensitivity.”

Depression comes in many forms, such as post-natal depression, the highs and lows of bi-polar disease, schoolyard bullying or the black dog of depression.

The RAW division in the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge is a stripped back performance. There are no sets or big props, the focus is on dance and drama to tell the story, with the aid of some hand-held props and costumes.

This is the first time that St Peter’s has ever won the national competition, having previously won the NSW title in 2005 in the open division.
