Timorese Ambassador trains Broken Bay teachers
The Catholic Schools Office, Diocese of Broken Bay welcomed two East Timorese dignitaries as part of the East Timor Teacher Placement Program in early March. The East Timor Teacher Placement Program (ETTPP) was established in 2004 and since then Australian teachers from the Dioceses of Broken Bay, Parramatta and Sydney, have spent time in Same, East Timor, sharing their training and experience with Timorese teachers. As part of this program, the Australian teachers take part in extensive training regarding the culture, history and language of Timor. Sister Susan Connelly (from the Mary MacKillop East Timor Mission) and Helen White facilitated the recent training session for teachers from the Broken Bay and Parramatta Dioceses. During the training the group had the honour of two extra trainers who assisted with language pronunciation. Abel Gutterres, the Ambassador for Timor Leste and Maria Jose de Jesus, the Consul General for Timor Leste led the group through the ‘helpful phrases for travellers’. The dignitaries showed great enthusiasm for the program, the Ambassador having driven from Canberra to Pennant Hills especially for the occasion. The visit reinforced an objective of the East Timor Teacher Placement Program which is to aid the development of friendship and solidarity between people, schools and communities in Australia and Timor Leste. Also present at the training session was Mr Gregorius Seran. A vital link in the program, Mr Seran is a secondary school teacher in Timor Leste, and also the liaison for the ETTPP in Timor. He is currently in Sydney on a two month English course, sponsored by the Catholic Education Dioceses of Broken Bay and Parramatta.
