White Ribbon Day picnic

St Paul’s takes an oath in support of White Ribbon Day

Students from St Paul’s Catholic College, Manly gathered together on 25 November to swear an oath and release white doves to raise awareness of violence against women as part of White Ribbon Day.

White Ribbon Day is the only national violence prevention campaign, with aims to raise awareness among Australian men and boys about the roles they can play to prevent violence against women. The campaign calls for men across Australia to speak out and take an oath.

“St Paul’s see this as a serious issue to bring to the attention of our boys,” said assistant principal Brett Foster.  “The statistics on violence against women in our society are quite horrific and this day represented an excellent opportunity to take a stand and ensure our boys are educated about and committed to eradicating violence against women in our society”.

Four hundred members of the school community came together for the White Ribbon picnic.  Twenty senior St Paul’s students led the proceedings and swore an oath on behalf of all men in the school community never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.  They then released twenty white doves in front of the group which included significant women in the lives of the boys.

In the spirit of the day attendees were asked to wear white as a visual symbol of their commitment and oath, and white ribbons and armbands were sold to raise money for the prevention of violence against women.
