Boys Education InitiativeEXCELLENCE IN BOYS EDUCATION
The Diocese of Broken Bay recognises the need to cater for boys' and girls' differing social and academic needs. The appointment of a Diocesan Boys Education Project Facilitator resulted in a Boys Education Action Research Project beginning in three schools in 2005 which made significant positive changes to boys' attitudinal and academic results. In 2006, ten more schools were involved in this flourishing initiative and were funded by the Federal Government's ‘Success for Boys' Program. The work in this critical area is continuing in 2007. Boys Education initiatives have been heavily data driven and constantly evaluated to ensure that genuine action research is being conducted.
The Diocese of Broken Bay has specifically focused on:
Analysis of boys' academic results Boys and literacy Male mentoring Violence, bullying and self esteem Meeting the academic and social needs of boys Boys and Information, Communication and Learning Technologies Boys and classroom practice Adapting curriculum and teacher pedagogies to cater for boys K-6 Boys' engagement Embedding Boys Education initiatives within other strategic directions.
The needs of our female students are extremely important and therefore data monitoring the girls' progress, alongside the boys, has been vital. The gender differences of our students cannot be ignored and hence we are addressing the strong need to examine, track and cater to these gender differences in our schools.
The Diocesan work completed in the area of Boys Education was rewarded with a National Award for Quality Schooling in 2006. This prestigious award, from Teaching Australia , was presented to a Diocesan Team by the Hon. Julie Bishop, Minister for Education, Science and Training, at Parliament House, Canberra .
The award winning Boys Education work, conducted in the Diocese of Broken Bay, has been presented at several national conferences, as well as included in journal articles.
