Catholic Schools Week showcases innovative education

During Catholic Schools Week, 14-20 March, Catholic schools across the Diocese of Broken Bay will be inviting the local community to visit their classrooms to experience the wonderful teaching and learning that takes place.
Visitors will be able to tour schools to see a range of learning programs including technology, creative and performing arts, sport, debating and all the key learning areas.
This year more than 240,000 students from 615 Catholic schools across NSW and the ACT will take part in the week of activities focused around the theme – ‘Open your minds, open your hearts’.
Br Tony Whelan, Director of Schools in the Diocese of Broken Bay, said the theme was very appropriate considering the wonderful teaching and learning that takes place in Catholic schools.
“It also reflects the support each school provides to its local community and to the more vulnerable or disadvantaged members of society,” said Br Tony.
Br Tony added that a feature of Catholic schools is a focus on social justice and creating opportunities for students to help those less fortunate than themselves.
“Our wish for our students is that their Catholic education will open their minds to the wonderful possibilities of learning but also will open their hearts to show compassion and empathy for people within their own communities and in the wider society.
“We are immensely proud of our Catholic heritage, and are committed to offering children in our schools the opportunity to follow Jesus as members of the Catholic community. Our schools are continuing the tradition of providing excellent opportunities for young Australians to develop academically, spiritually and socially within a caring and nurturing Catholic community.”
