Broken Bay students get cybersmart

World Safer Internet Day will be celebrated next Tuesday 9 February at three Catholic primary schools in the Diocese of Broken Bay. The aim of the celebration is to promote the safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones. The theme this year is Think B4 U Post.

Around 200 students from St Kevin’s Catholic School, Dee Why, St Agatha’s Catholic School, Pennant Hills and Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School, Wyoming will be participating in an online interactive cyber safety challenge, Cybersmart Detectives, which will be coordinated by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

Staff and Year 5 and 6 students from the three schools will participate in the program on Tuesday from 11.00am – 12.00pm. Students will work on-line in teams of three supported by guides, classroom teachers and CSO Education Officers.

“Cyber safety is as much a priority for young people now as road safety is,” said Peter Rafferty, Principal of St Kevin’s Catholic School.

“While there are many benefits there are also many dangers inherent in the way modern technology may be used. Children particularly need to learn how to stay safe when they are online and using mobile phones and the Cybersmart program is a great, interactive and fun way of teaching students about cyber safety.”
