Hearts For Haiti at St Leo’s

While the focus of Valentines Day is often commercial with flowers, cards and chocolates, students at St. Leo’s College, Wahroonga opted for a heart felt approach this year.

Wearing their ‘heart on their sleeve’ literally, senior students sold heart shaped stickers to raise much-needed funds for the Haiti appeal.

Senior Leader and one of the organisers Serene Lodhia said students are encouraged to develop a social conscience through activities that promote compassionate and responsible action on social justice issues.

The Senior Leaders along with the SRC and Youth Minister are always looking at ways students can make a difference.

Raising funds is just one way; students also give their time.

Each month students, accompanied by teachers, are out on Night Patrol with St Vincent de Paul. Year groups spend their lunchtime making and preparing sandwiches and drinks to feed Sydney’s homeless.

Monday lunchtimes for some students is spent at a local nursing home. Volunteer students from year 7 -12 enjoy spending time, talking and listening to the elderly residents.

“The idea of reaching out to communities in need, like the people of Haiti, is part of the ethos of the College”, says Jamila Torpy, teacher and appeal organiser. ‘It is also an appealing, relevant and fun way for all students to be a part of Valentine’s Day, whilst serving the broader goals of social justice at the College’.

Over $700 was raised for Haiti.
