Broken Bay Catholic schools build excellence in leadership

When teachers get together to learn amazing things can happen

A system wide Leading Learning forum attracted 260 school leaders from across the 43 schools in the Diocese of Broken Bay on 27/28 July at Hornsby RSL. The focus was on leading professional learning to improve student learning. The Leading Learning Leadership Forum 2 was an important part of the Diocesan Leading Learning 2011-2012 strategy, and included representatives from the Sydney and Wollongong Dioceses. The power of the forum was all about when teachers get together and apply their collective knowledge and skills to the challenges of teaching and learning, amazing things can happen.

As part of the strategy, the Catholic Schools Office has partnered with the University of Auckland’s Centre for Educational Leadership (UACEL) in the design and implementation of the Leading Learning Programme.

Keynote speakers Professor Helen Timperley and Linda Bendikson (UACEL) provided a clear rationale to the gathered school leaders for the importance of leading teacher professional learning.   They emphasised the importance of the Teacher Inquiry and Knowledge Building Cycle and Practice Analysis Conversation and how they are linked to improving teacher learning and practice to improve student outcomes.

The Forum encouraged a collaborative process with school leadership teams to achieve the goals set out in their School Improvement Plans through leading professional learning, as well as providing a rich context for the Leading Learning program.
