Broken Bay teachers leading learning in their own classrooms

Excellence in teaching is about maximising effective teaching time. This was one of the key messages presented to Broken Bay schools’ staff during their Leading Learning professional development days held in October. Underpinning this message was a commitment to three obligations: to cause successful learning, to cause greater interest in the subject, and to cause greater confidence.

Attracting over 900 predominantly primary teaching and non teaching staff as well as secondary Leading Learning teams from across the 43 Diocese of Broken Bay schools, the three cluster based forums were central to the Diocese of Broken Bay’s Leading Learning 2011-2012 strategy, and were facilitated by Graeme Aitken, Dean of the Faculty of Education, University of Auckland and Mary Wootton, Project Director - Learning Media Ltd.

The focus of the day for teachers was on supporting inquiry into student engagement and learning by exploring how to know when teaching is effective, increasing the time and quality on task and establishing criteria for success.

Individual school groups had time within the day to gather together and reflect on how to increase effective teaching time to improve student learning outcomes.

In a concurrent program at the same venues, non teaching staff considered Leading Learning and the impact on their role, preparing for change and managing conflict and stress in the workplace.
