National testing indicates high quality teaching across the Broken Bay Diocesan School System
The results of the 2010 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) were released on 10 September. Principals and Assistant Principals from all Broken Bay systemic schools are now leading the analysis at the school level to clearly identify areas of strength, challenges and support that may be required for individual students. The school-based analysis will be supported by Schools Consultants and Education Officers. At the system level, the 2010 results indicate clear areas of strength. The mean of the system cohort was above state and national means in every test area, at every year level. The only exception to this was Year 9 Numeracy. In some test areas, notably Year 3 Reading, the system cohort mean was significantly above the state and national mean, indicating effective early literacy practices. Quality teaching practices and effective support structures for students are also indicated by the band distributions. The percentage of students who achieved in the top two bands in years 3 and 5 was well above the state and national percentages in every test area. The percentage of students placed in the bottom two bands (at or below national minimum standard) was well below both state and national percentage in these bands, in every test area. “The NAPLAN results clearly indicate that literacy and numeracy are strong priorities across the Diocesan School System,” noted Brother Tony Whelan, Director of Schools. “Our students experience high quality teaching that focuses on their learning needs, informed by a deep understanding of standards and pedagogy.” “Each of our schools will now use the wide range of data available to them to formulate their School Improvement Plan.”
