Broken Bay Students learn about Social Justice

On Wednesday 25 August 2010, 250 Catholic school students from 15 different schools in the Diocese took part in the annual Year 10 Social Justice Day at St Pius College, Oxford Falls. Organised by the Mission Services team at the Catholic Schools Office, students were challenged to live out their Catholic faith and find ways to contribute to a just society.

This year the students learnt about building bridges and celebrating diversity. Students from St Leo’s Catholic College, Wahroonga performed a dramatic presentation on inter-faith dialogue. Students represented a Catholic Priest, a Jewish Rabbi, a Buddhist Monk, a Hindu spiritual leader and a Islamic Imam.

Other workshops attended on the day involved discussions on fair trade, homelessness, refugees, homophobia and biodiversity.

Students also enjoyed the opportunity to mix with young people from other schools and discuss strategies for social justice and advocacy.

“The Social Justice Day is a great opportunity for the students to meet people they would otherwise never meet,” said Joanne Hack, Education Officer, Mission Services. “They have the chance to discuss common issues facing young people today, which is important as they’ll be the leaders making decisions affecting our society in the future.”

The Year 10 students returned to their schools with the responsibility of raising these issues in their own school communities and implementing a social justice action plan to highlight these issues.
