St Kevin’s students Wrap with Love
Students from St Kevin’s Catholic School, Dee Why have recently knitted a blanket as part of the Wrap with Love campaign. Inspired by ABC radio’s ‘Knit In’ in June, members of the Student Representative Council (SRC) at St Kevin’s took on the challenge to knit squares and sew them together to make a blanket. In the past, wraps have been sent to Chile, Argentina, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Kenya, Zambia, Youth off the Streets, Northern Beaches Refugee Group and the Victoria Bush Fire Appeal. The wraps cannot be bought, sold or traded. They are caring gifts from the people of Australia to the people of the world. The first challenge was for the students to learn to knit. Along with teacher Mrs Hade, a group of teachers and parents gave the SRC students basic instructions and they took over enthusiastically once the casting on was completed. Each Monday at lunchtime, throughout June and July, the SRC met and knitted away their lunch time and any spare moment they could get, including knitting through class story time each day. The students were supported at home by parents and grandparents and eventually the target of 28 squares was reached and the wrap was able to be sewn together. Once again the students learned new skills and were particularly proud of their blanket stitch. The blanket was delivered to Manly Library collection point last Friday 30 July. Extra squares were also completed and these were also delivered to be joined with others to give warmth to someone in need.
