Developing a skill set through vocational training

At the recent Central Coast Apprenticeship and Traineeship Advisory Committee Awards, Year 12 student Claire Bodle from St Peter's Catholic College, Tuggerah was recognised for her outstanding commitment to vocational education and training. Claire was awarded the 2010 Central Coast/Hunter Valley Region Vocational Student of the Year. St Peter's, in collaboration with The Aspect School Central Coast and Youth Connections also won the VET in Schools School Excellence Award.

Claire studies five vocational subjects at St Peter's, including Business Services, Entertainment, Hospitality, Information Technology and Retail, as well as participating in a Retail School Based Traineeship. Claire's employer, Camera House Erina, say she is an excellent employee with a range of relevant skills.

Since winning the CCATC Award Claire has been selected as a finalist for the 2010 NSW State Training Awards. The winner of this award will be announced at a ceremony at the Sydney Convention Centre on 19 September. St Peter’s has a good record, with Brenton Pearce winning Australian Runner up as the School Based Apprentice of the Year in Construction in 2008.

Students and parents on the Central Coast recognise the value in developing a transferable skill set to assist young people in finding employment. With the completion of the Trade Training Centre at the St Peter's site set for 2011, there will be greater opportunity for students to access industry standard commercial kitchens for hospitality, metalworking, engineering and construction facilities and to participate in school based apprenticeships and traineeships.
