Diocese celebrates World Youth Day 08
Schools, parishes and families across the diocese have hosted over five thousand pilgrims from over fifty different countries during World Youth Day week. In a thank you address to school communities, Director of Schools Brother Anthony Whelan acknowledged the generous contribution of hundreds of volunteers:
It would be no exaggeration to suggest that this week Catholic schools in our Diocese and our neighbouring dioceses demonstrated the very best expression of faith, hospitality and welcome, generosity and friendship to our pilgrims from across Australia, Oceania and the global community of the Church. In simple words, thank you can sound simplistic. However, at a time when we sense our global connection with the universal Church through the presence of Pope Benedict XVI, the words take on a Eucharistic message that we may learn further how to be one and how we can continue to be witnesses to the ends of the earth.
With many pilgrims now starting to leave this great south land of the Holy Spirit and commence their long journeys homeward, the young Catholic people in Broken Bay are now challenged to respond to the message from His Holiness Benedict XVl to build their lives on firm foundations that will endure, to live their lives in a way that ‘opens up space for the Spirit’, to use the gifts they have been given and to make a difference. |
