Child Protection
Diocesan Systemic Schools are required to provide 'safe and supportive' environments for all members of the school communities. The requirement to create 'safe and supportive school environments' is not solely related to 'child protection' and overlaps with, for instance, Positive Behaviour Support, Restorative Practices, Occupational Health and Safety, Pastoral Care, Anti-Harassment, and Anti-Bullying policy development and implementation in schools, as well as the NSW Institute of Teachers' Professional Standards.
There are specific requirements with regard to child protection arising from the NSW Child Protection legislation, the Board of Studies Registration requirements, the National Safe Schools Framework, and the obligations of Bishop David Walker as Head of Agency under Part 3A Ombudsman Act 1974.
Employees and volunteers who have direct contact with students are to undertake training about their legal responsibilities in relation to child protection, mandatory reporting, and other relevant expectations as to appropriate and professional conduct in schools.
All employees, volunteers, external tutors and other external providers are to be informed of the requirements for the Catholic Schools Office to notify and investigate allegations of 'reportable conduct' and investigate 'exempt allegations' in compliance with Part 3A of the Ombudsman Act 1974, as well as being informed of their obligations under the Commission for Children and Young People Act 1998 - Working With Children Check (' pre-employment screening for child-related employment)
All persons seeking employment in Diocesan systemic schools or the Catholic Schools Office are required to meet the requirements of the Working with Children Check by completing and submitting the online Applicant Declaration and Consent form
All volunteers and student workers are also required to complete the online Volunteer/Student Worker Declarationto declare that they are not prohibited from working in child-related employment.
Any enquiries in relation to employment screening and child protection matters may be referred to the child protection team on 9847 0612.
