Institute of Teachers

Legislation to establish the NSW Institute of Teachers was passed by the NSW Parliament in June 2004. The NSW Institute of Teachers commenced operating on 1 January 2005.

New Scheme Teachers are described as follows:

  • a person who is employed as a teacher for the first time in NSW from 1 October 2004 onwards;
  • a person returning to teaching after an absence of 5 or more years; or
  • a person who has only taught interstate or overseas.

A Transition Scheme Teacher is described by the NSW Institute of Teachers Act as follows:

‘a person without either recognised teaching qualifications or a subject content degree who has been employed as a teacher before 1 October 2004’

Process of Accreditation

All New Scheme Teachers and Transition Scheme Teachers must be accredited by a Teacher Accreditation Authority. The Catholic Schools Office, Diocese of Broken Bay is a Teacher Accreditation Authority. It is an offence to teach without accreditation.

New scheme teachers who wish to teach in a systemic school in the Diocese of Broken Bay must be accredited prior to commencing employment. Applications for accreditation are made online through the NSW Institute of Teachers website. However, before an applicant is able to complete the online application, they must first obtain a password from the website by clicking on the ‘My Account’ link.

If further information is required or technical problems are experienced when accessing any section of the Institute website, please contact the Institute on 1300 739 338. For all other information about accreditation policy and requirements, please refer to the Institute website.

Please note that all new scheme teachers who apply for accreditation with the CSO and are yet to be classified to work in the Diocese will have their accreditation application processed concurrently with their classification application. In addition, the accreditation process is separate to the classification process. If CSO, Broken Bay is nominated by an applicant as the TAA, the application form and all supplementary documentation requested for accreditation must be submitted to Human Resource Services at the CSO before the application will be processed. Please be aware that this may take a few weeks.
