Institute of Teachers

Legislation to establish the NSW Institute of Teachers was passed by the NSW Parliament in June 2004. The NSW Institute of Teachers commenced operating on 1 January 2005.

The Institute oversees a system of Accreditation and recognition of teachers' professional capacity against a set of Professional Teaching Standards.

The NSW Institute of Teachers Act has designated the following as NEW SCHEME TEACHERS:

  • a person who is employed as a teacher for the first time from 1 October 2004 onwards
  • a person returning to teaching after an absence of 5 or more years

The NSW Institute of Teachers Act has designated the following people as TRANSITION SCHEME TEACHERS:

  • A person without either recognised teaching qualifications or a subject content degree who has been employed as a teacher before 1 October 2004.

All New Scheme Teachers and Transition Scheme Teachers must be accredited by a Teacher Accreditation Authority. It is an offence to teach without accreditation.

A New Scheme Teacher who wishes to teach in a systemic school in the Broken Bay Diocese, must be accredited prior to commencing employment.

Accreditation forms can be acquired from the NSW Institute of Teachers website or from the Catholic Schools Office, Broken Bay which is itself a Teacher Accreditation Authority.

Resources for supervisors of New Scheme Teachers and Institute Matters newsletters are also available

For further information about accreditation policy and requirements, refer to the Institute website: www.nswteachers.nsw.edu.au
